A disease resistant variety from Czech Republic. Topaz was introduced in 1984 from a cross between Rubin & Vanda. Topaz produces medium sized flat-round apples with a smooth skin. Red striped over yellow orange background. Has a flavour similar to Lord Lambourne, which is in its parentage – crisp , sweet and juicy with sharpness. Can be heavy cropping so thin early summer to increase fruit size. It is one of the latest ripening apples we grow comparable with Winston and Sturmer Pippin.
Though usually picked in October the apples will stay on the tree a long time into December after the trees have lost their leaves and the apples are still very crunchy, juicy and tasting great. Never the tallest of apple trees we supply but it is moderately vigorous and becomes a precocious cropper in time. If cropping is heavy pick the apples earlier when too hard and sharp. The apples will sweeten with storage.
