CompareFirst recorded in the 1880s Thurstons Red arose near Dymock close to the Gloucestershire and Herefordshire border. Hence also known as Dymock Red. The pears are pyriform or turbinate in shape becoming yellowish skinned with a red flush and harvested mid October.
The status of Thurston’s Red was critical, with one existing tree being identified to propagate from. The village of Dymock has the unusual reputation of being the home of three genuses of fruit an Apple, plum and a Pear, albeit a Perry Pear. We grow the Plum – Dymock Red but not the apple. None of the varieties are well known far beyond where they arose!
