A small tree in maturity with an upright habit. Crops well, producing pyriform shaped pears of a good size with a yellow skin rarely orange flushed. Harvested late September and needs to be milled within a week. A variety that used to be planted for dessert or culinary pears, but now considered too astringent. However it produces a very good quality perry.
First recorded in 1811, its provenance not known but now widely planted. The origin of its name is not known.
