Major is an early bittersweet variety being harvested from late September. Grown commercially to extend the harvesting season forwards. A ‘jersey’ type apple with a conical shape and small to medium in size covered with a pinkish red striped flush.
Apples have a sweet yet astringent flesh with a fruity flavour. Major makes a fruity cider of moderate quality on its own. It can be blended with other varieties to produce a more balanced cider. Apples start to drop from late September but do not keep well on the ground so harvest promptly.
