The round conical pears of Beurre Superfin turn from green to yellow as they ripen with patchs of light brown russet over a lot of the fruit. The flesh at its best is creamy yellow, melting, buttery, weet with some lemony acidity. To achieve this excellent flavour care is needed to achieve the best time of picking and avoid it spoiling from the core. It will not keep a long time, so once picked bring them into the warmth of the house to finish ripening through October.
A very long established pear, Beurre Superfin was raised from a seedling in France in 1837, first fruiting in 1844. It was given a curious latter name – Superfin, which no doubt reflects its qualities with a combination of a couple of superlatives – ‘super’ & ‘finest’.
It was introduced into the UK in 1851 and spread around the world becoming renowned as a high quality pear but not grown much as a commercial variety.
