Concorde was raised at East Malling Research Station, Kent in 1968. Named somewhat later Concorde very appropriately after the supersonic airliner, which like the pear, was a collaboration between the UK and France. The Pear is a cross between the English Conference and the French Doyenne du Comice.
The crossing of these two high quality pears has resulted in an a excellent pear – Concorde. A compact grower and heavy fruiting that since its introduction in 1995 has been grown commercially world wide and has become available to garden growers.
The medium sized pears are shaped like Conference, turn from green to light gold often with red flushing on their sun exposed side often with russetting. Sweet, juicy, melting pale yellow flesh. As with all pears best to pick the Concorde fruits while still hard and allow to ripen indoors using by Christmas. Shop bought pears grown in the UK and the near continent will be available longer because of refrigeration.
Pollination group – C Pick – late September Storage until – November or early December.
