Bred from Cox crossed with earlier ripening Duchess of Oldenburg. The result is an excellent Cox like apple with an enjoyable rich honeyed flavour. Flesh crisp, juicy & tinged yellow. Attractive medium sized apples with yellow skin flushed red. A very good early season variety.
Consistently high yielding. Very good for organic growing. One of five recommended apples to come from a recently completed five year organic trial. Also known as Red Alkmene / Red Windsor being a redder sport of Alkmene / Early Windsor.
Bred in Germany in 1930s, Alkmene / Early Windsor was only introduced into the UK in 1972 with Cevaal following shortly after.
