Widely planted in the past this variety makes a large tree of spreading, even drooping habit. The pears are usually turbinate in shape with green or yellowish skin. One of the later picked varieties in early November and can be stored for well over a month before milling. Produces a good quality fruity perry.
May have originated in the 1700s in Gloucestershire north of Gloucester at Norton bearing in mind it has been known as Norton Butt. Now found widely through the three counties.
