Winter Nelis is a good late cropping pear producing juicy sweet fruits. Round conical in shape the small to medium sized pears with a long stalk have a rough skin that turns yellowish green but is heavily russetted more so at the eye end rather than around the stalk.
Winter Nelis is not a strong grower so best grown on Quince A to give it some vigour. A good variety where a few pear varieties are being grown to extend the season. Raised in Belguim, like many other quality Pears, by Jean Charles Nelis in the early 1800s and introduced into the UK shortly after in 1818.
Later ripening Pears, like Winter Nelis and Glou Morceau, require good late summer warmth to ripen them. In more northerly UK locations they will do best in a very sheltered sunny position or against a wall.
