A long established culinary pear of high quality. When ready for picking the skin turns to greenish yellow with a dull red flush. On cooking for 1-2 hours the flesh of the large pears turns fron white to pale pink.
It is a strong growing tree, a triploid, so will not pollinate other pear varieties. A very old variety that arose in France, first recorded in 1665, but grows well in the UK and is as reliable as other pears.
