CompareBeauty of Bath is a very early dessert apple picked from late July. Medium sized flat round apples largely flushed bright red interspersed with many large yellow lenticels. When ripe the apple is sweet with some acidity (1864, Bath)
In the past Beauty of Bath was an important commercial apple so became well known through the UK. It heralded the start of the UK’s apple season. Trees have a tendency to drop their apples before they are fully ripe, as in a photo, so commercial growers and others would often place straw beneath the trees to cushion their fall!
The things that were done in the past before apples were brought from around the world and storage refridgerated storage facilities! Another less well known early apple that ripens at a similar time is Gladstone. Like Beauty of Bath it will not keep but could also be a useful addition to an orchard extending the season of picking.
