A deservedly widely grown Perry pear because of the high quality of its perry. Yellow or yellow green pears with russet at either ends or just around the eye. Turbinate or sometimes pyriform in shape. Produces a medium acid, medium tannin perry of high quality. Mid season flowering. Harvest - late September.
Can grow into large trees given good soil. Understood to have arisen at Moorcroft Farm, Colwall along the Malvern Hills - one of its synoyms. Other names applied to this variety include Choke pear & Stinking Bishop, after an occupant of the farm in the 1800s! Small trees, approx 3', available hence reduced price.
